What is order synchronisation?

If you use multiple POS devices in your business, order synchronisation lets you connect and sync as many of them as you need. With this feature, you can:

  • Get real-time updates as all open orders are automatically synced across every connected device

  • Reduce errors since changes to an order are instantly shown on all devices

  • Work more efficiently with handheld devices that are connected to your main POS system, which remains the central hub for payments and order overview

Order synchronisation is available on POS Lite, SumUp Terminal, and the SumUp app on both iOS and Android (tablets and phones).

I am a free POS user. Can I use order synchronisation?

Order synchronisation is exclusively available with POS Plus. To access this feature and many more, sign up for POS Plus.

How does order synchronisation work?

To sync orders across devices, you first need to enable the open orders feature on each device you want to connect and then turn on order synchronisation. These features are off by default.

To activate them on a device:

  1. From the device, go to “Profile”.

  2. Tap “Orders” and enable the “Accept open orders” toggle.

  3. Under “Synchronise multiple devices”, activate the “Sync this device” toggle.

Repeat these steps on every device you want to synchronise.

Order synchronisation can only be activated or deactivated when there are no orders in progress. This action can be performed by any team member profile.

How to know when order synchronisation is down?

When order synchronisation is enabled across multiple devices, all orders are synced in real time. However, if a device loses its network connection, the synchronisation will be temporarily interrupted.

In this case, the following notifications will appear at the top of the screen:

  • “Your changes aren’t online. Last synced at …”: informs that the connection is lost and the device is no longer synchronised with other devices.

  • “Syncing orders…”: indicates that the device is restoring its connection

  • “Back online”: confirms that the device is fully synchronised and up to date with other devices

Can I still operate if my device loses connection?

You can continue using the device. However, any actions you take won’t be reflected on other devices until the connection is restored.
